Scientific Advisory Board

VectorLogics intends to keep its management and workforce streamlined and efficient. Its highly capable and proven management and scientific teams will be augmented only in essential functions within the next year.

Imre Kovesdi, PhD, Chief Executive Officer
Dr. Kovesdi serves as Chief Executive Officer of VLI. Prior to joining VLI, he served as Chief Scientific Officer with GenVec Inc. (NASDAQ:GNVC).  He joined GenVec in 1993 as one of its first employees and held several senior positions directing research, development and manufacturing before being appointed as CSO.    Dr. Kovesdi was also a major contributor to GenVec’s intellectual property portfolio. Prior to joining GenVec, he led projects in the development of gene expression systems and therapeutic gene design at the Medical Research Division of the New York-based American Cyanamid Company. He holds a PhD in molecular biology and a degree in electrical engineering. Dr. Kovesdi is the holder of over 80 US and foreign patents and has authored over 125 scientific articles in the areas of virology, gene delivery and molecular biology. Dr. Kovesdi has served on the boards of a number of biotechnology and information technology companies.

David T. Curiel, MD, PhD, Chief Scientific Officer and Founder
Dr. Curiel heads the Gene Therapy Center (GTC) of the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He graduated from medical school at Emory University in 1982 where he also completed his internship and residency in Internal Medicine. Dr. Curiel's scientific training includes tenure ship at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, at the Pulmonary Branch of the Heart and Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) from 1985-1989, a fellowship in Biotechnology at the National Cancer Institute, Navy Medical Oncology Branch from 1989-1990. Dr. Curiel has been at the University of Alabama at Birmingham since 1993. He received his PhD in 2002 from the University of Groningen, in the Netherlands. He is a recognized leader in the field of vector development and in bench-to-bed translation of gene therapy and virotherapy interventions. Dr. Curiel was the Founder of VectorLogics, Inc. and currently serves as VLI’s Chief Scientific Officer.

Alan H. Dean, Managing Partner, Fund Operations, Greer Capital
Mr. Dean has more than 20 years experience in all aspects of technology transfer, in both the non-profit and for-profit sectors. Prior to joining GCA, Mr. Dean was Director of the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio's Office of Technology Transfer, where he played a prominent role in the formation of numerous successful technology companies, and in greatly elevating licensing productivity.  Mr. Dean was also head of technology commercialization at Southern Research Institute, an institution known for its oncology drug discoveries, and led the team responsible for licensing Institute inventions and forming technology spin-offs. He co-founded the drug-delivery company, Southern BioSystems, Inc. Mr. Dean has served in a director and advisory capacity on many corporate boards, a notable example being an advisor for GCA’s S.C.O.U.T. Fund.  He has had extensive experience and responsibility for financing the growth of technology companies, including private placements and industrial development bonds, and has served in all management capacities at one time or another for various start-ups.  Mr. Dean sits on the board of CardioSpectra, Inc. as well as BioDtech.  Mr. Dean’s educational background includes an MBA from the UAB and a B.S. in Chemistry from the University of Alabama.

Charles A Reinhart III, Senior Vice President Finance & Corporate Strategy, Millennium
Mr. Reinhart joined Millennium in October, 2007 with over 25 years of diverse financial experience, including 15 years within the biopharmaceutical industry.  At Millennium, Mr. Reinhart leads the finance team, overseeing the accounting and financial reporting, financial planning and analysis, tax, treasury, insurance and strategic sourcing functions and leads/participate in all capital market and business development transactions.  Prior to joining Millennium, Mr. Reinhart fulfilled similar responsibilities as the Vice President, Finance at Cephalon, Inc. from 2000 to 2007.  During his tenure at Cephalon, the company grew into a profitable, top tier biotechnology company with 3000 employees and annual revenues of approximately $2 billion.  From 1990 to 2000, Mr. Reinhart held executive positions in finance at several early stage healthcare and biotechnology companies including Delsys Pharmaceutical Corporation, GenVec, Inc. and Dynamic Digital Displays, Inc.  From 1982 to 1986, Mr. Reinhart was employed by the public accounting firm of Ernst & Whinney (now Ernst & Young), rising to the level of Audit Manager.  Mr. Reinhart is a certified public accountant.  He graduated cum laude from Lehigh University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and earned an M.B.A. from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

J. David Sakura, PhD, Senior Advisor, Fortis Securities Inc.
Dr. Sakura has close to 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical, biotechnology and biomedical industries. Since 1994, he has been a managing director with Fortis Securities, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Fortis, a Dutch-Belgium financial group. Dr. Sakura is active in life science investment banking in Europe as well as in the United States. Previously, he was President and co-founder of Aberlyn Capital Management Company and senior consultant with Arthur D. Little, Inc. Dr. Sakura received his PhD in biochemistry from the University of Arizona, and a Masters in Public Health from the Harvard School of Public Health. Dr. Sakura was a founding member of the Advisory Council for the Center for the Prevention of Cardiovascular Disease at the Harvard School of Public Health.
